Abdominal Aortic aneurysms (AAA) are often underdiagnosed and/or undertreated in women. Most clinical studies focus on men because of the commonality. Women have four times the risk of their aneurysms rupturing than men even while being monitored medically. AAAs in women have a higher risk for rupturing at smaller sizes as well as occurring in family members. The size threshold for AAA repair is 5.0cm in women and may be lower if they are experiencing other symptoms.
Ladies, please have yourself checked for an aneurysm if you are a smoker, have a family history of aneurysms, have been diagnosed with hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis) and/or high blood pressure. You are your own best health advocate.
