Hockey: Girls shine in tournament
There was something extra special about this year’s Northern Chautauqua County Youth Hockey Association annual tournament. For the first time in 33 years, there was a competitive girls’ division and championship.
What was even more impressive, of course, was the camaraderie of the girls. In the championship game on Sunday, it was a true battle between friends. Many of the Steeler girl players knew the Erie players or play them on occasion with them.
In this year’s Winter Olympics, the U.S. women’s hockey team won gold. As for the local tournament, the championship game was medal worthy. The Erie girls took the game, 2-0, but all the participants were definitely winners.
