Chautauqua Lake High announces top grads

Secondary school principal Josh Liddell has announced the top students in the Chautauqua Lake Central School Class of 2018, Joshua Janicki and Anna Sena. Both graduates were members of the championship Envirothon team that placed first in Chautauqua County and competed at the state level, finishing in eighth place among 47 teams. The two top graduates each earned a gold honor pin, reflecting a grade point average of 94.5 percent or higher, as well as an academic pullover, the highest academic honor. They also received Academic Excellence scholarship awards.
Valedictorian Joshua Janicki, the son of Stephanie and Jeffrey Janicki of Westfield, is a National Merit Commended Scholar. Joshua has long competed in varsity soccer and track, for which he was named MVP in 2017 and a Section VI Scholar Athlete in 2018. He has been active as a tutor and as a peer mentor and in the Ski Club, STEM competition, Student Administration (three-time class treasurer), and school musicals, as well as in Spring Travel Soccer. Throughout high school he sang in the select Chorale, and in ninth grade he was named Outstanding Woodwind Player (flute). As a sophomore, with a small group from the CLCS chorus he participated in the Total Vocal II concert at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Joshua was honored this spring for academic excellence in Jamestown Community College Problem Solving and Statistics classes. He was recently named Chautauqua Lake’s Top Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Machinist of the Year and received the U.S. Marine Corps Distinguished Athlete Award.
He received the Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Scholarship, as well as the Rensselaer Medal and the American Chemical Society award for excellence in chemistry. He has received awards for the highest grade point average in all core subjects and was recognized for outstanding achievement in Principles of Engineering and Digital Electronics and for academic excellence in Advanced Web Design and Spanish II and III.
Joshua is among the first recipients of the Gene Haas Scholarship for exceptional competency and performance in the STEM Lab manufacturing courses at Chautauqua Lake and for proficiency in Computer Numerical Control (CNC) programming and machining, manual lathe turning and milling, and/or welding. His other scholarships include a Lake Chautauqua Memorial VGW Post #8647 Americanism Award and a Thunderbird Athletic Club Award.
Joshua has participated in numerous class and National Honor Society service projects. For two years he has been employed at Portage Pie in Westfield. In the fall he will begin Rochester Institute of Technology’s Engineering Exploration program.
Salutatorian Anna Sena is the daughter of Carol and Richard Sena of Ashville. She was president of Student Administration this year and has been an active participant throughout her high school career, holding several class offices. An avid sports enthusiast, Anna has long competed in soccer and track (Distance Leader). She earned Coaches’ Awards and varsity letters in both sports, as well as being named MVP and Most Improved in track. For many years, she has been active on the High School Bowl academic team, the Envirothon team, and in the Ski Club.
As well as singing in the select Chorale, Anna has played trombone in the school band throughout high school and has been trombone section leader. She was recently honored with the CLCS Director’s Award for Instrumental Music. She has acted in several school musicals and has played in the band at Memorial Day services in Mayville. She was a 2017 contestant in the Chautauqua Area Scholarship Program (formerly Junior Miss).
She is a recipient of a U.S. Marine Corps award for Scholastic Excellence and has been recognized for academic excellence in Field Science and in Jamestown Community College Calculus, as well as for Academic Perseverance in Advanced Placement English. She was recently awarded numerous scholarships, including the Chautauqua Grange #571 Scholarship Fund, a CLCS Chorale Award, the Keith Emanuelson Music Award, the John S. & Dorothy C. Gleason Scholarship, the John J. Maxwell Science Scholarship Award, and a scholarship from the Knights of Columbus Jamestown Council #926.
In addition to numerous National Honor Society and class service projects, Anna is an active participant in the community in other ways. She has been involved in several “Walk for Life” events and fundraisers to benefit Women’s Services of Jamestown. At St. James Roman Catholic Church in Jamestown, she has been an altar server for ten years, active in women’s services and other church events. She was recently named Altar Server of the Year by the Diocese of Buffalo. During a student travel opportunity, Anna also volunteered at an elementary school in Lima, Peru.
Last summer, Anna was a Project Wild America Youth Ambassador Intern at the Roger Tory Peterson Institute (RTPI) of Natural History in Jamestown. There she worked alongside RTPI crew members, researching nature and wildlife and conducting community outreach programs. She was previously employed as head gardener at The White Carrot restaurant in Mayville.
In August, Anna will begin one year of studies at Jamestown Community College, where she received a USA Scholarship. The following year, she will attend the SUNY Ranger School in Wanakena, New York, for an Associate’s Degree in forest technology. She will then complete a bachelor’s degree at the College of Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) in Syracuse.
For two years both Joshua and Anna have been active in the National Honor Society. They were also active participants in the Science Olympiad. They were named CLCS Scholar Athletes of the Year, and both received State Comptroller Student Achievement Awards and were honored for academic achievement in Participation in Government and Advanced Placement Environmental Science classes. Both graduates have been named to the Dean’s List for JCC College Connections courses at CLCS. This school year, the Westfield-Mayville Rotary Club honored both Joshua and Anna as Scholars of the Month.
