Family, friends and faculty – along with current NHS members inducted in 2018 — were on hand as these high-achieving students were feted for their character, service, scholarship and leadership.

Following a call to order by NHS President Samantha Kinnaird and a welcome by high school Principal Rebekah Moraites, the Pledge of Allegiance was led by current NHS members Anna North, Andrew Musacchio and Kristine Twoguns. The four NHS values were then presented to the audience. NHS Treasurer Grace Pawlak gave an overview of character, Secretary Olivia Ackley discussed service, Vice President Ryan Gernatt talked about scholarship and Kinnaird detailed leadership.

One by one the inductees were announced by current NHS members Caitlin Samargian and Pierce Lukonaitis. They then participated in a candle-lighting ceremony before standing together to recite the NHS pledge in unison, led by NHS member Justin Kohn.

The 2019 NHS inductees at Gowanda are: Nicholas Christopher, Christian Cook, James Keller, Kylie Lauer, Alyscia LeTran, Tia Moppert, Olivia Pawlak, Kasie Salzman, Matthew Smuda and Tatum Stitzel. All the new inductees are in 11th grade, except for Salzman and Smuda, who are seniors.

Ten juniors and seniors at Gowanda High School were welcomed to the ranks of the district’s chapter of the National Honor Society during a candle-lighting ceremony held Wednesday, Feb. 13, in the auditorium. Afterwards, the families were treated to a dinner in the cafeteria.

NHS advisors Ms. Kathryn Haim and Ms. Margaret King announced the senior inductee graduation awards, reading each senior’s greatest accomplishments and awarding a gold or silver medal based upon academic achievement. Closing remarks were given by current NHS member Angela Zheng.

A dinner of chicken parmesan, pasta with sauce, lemon garlic green beans, salad, rolls and brownies catered by the district’s food services and nutrition department for the NHS members and their families followed in the high school cafeteria. The dinner blessing was led by current NHS members Brooke Riedel and Victoria Schultz.
