Chautauqua Lake Central School names their Student’s of the Month

Kyle Morgan

Students of the Month at Chautauqua Lake Central School, honored for January achievements, are Hannah Roush, McKenna Dorman, Hannah Weise, Sophia Shearer, Mallory Morrison, and Kyle Morgan. The student recognition program honors students in grades 7 through 12 whose classroom performance, attitude toward learning, work ethic and extra-curricular activities set them apart.

Senior Hannah Roush is the daughter of Daniel and Marcy Roush of Mayville. Human Anatomy and Chorale are the classes she enjoys the most this year. Hannah excels in many arenas of CLCS life. She has competed on the soccer team since freshman year, earning the Western New York Scholar Athlete Award. She is a member of National Honor Society, the yearbook staff, the High School Bowl team, and Book Club. She demonstrates her love for music by being one of the founding members of the student created and directed A Capella group. She is performing in the musical this year, after playing in the pit for last year’s musical. She has been on the High Honor Roll since freshman year, won the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science award as a junior, and was the Rotary Club Scholar of the Month as a senior. Outside of school, Hannah enjoys snowmobiling, playing the guitar and clarinet, and collecting hockey pucks. When asked what historical person she admires, Hannah stated Lin-Manuel Miranda because “he is a musical genius and even when others laughed in his face and said that he would never be able to create a musical about Alexander Hamilton, he was able to fulfill his dreams.” If given the opportunity, Hannah would enjoy becoming Kim Pegula for a day because “she owns part of the Buffalo Sabres and Buffalo Bills and she gives back to the community.” Future plans include attending dental school and becoming an orthodontist.

McKenna Dorman, daughter of Peter and Sonya Dorman of Ripley, is a junior who names art, chorus, and U.S. History as her favorite subjects. McKenna has performed in the school musicals every year of her high school career. She has also performed in chorus and this year participated in the Science Olympiad. She has earned awards for highest average in a variety of subjects and was also named Student of the Month as a sophomore. Outside of school, McKenna participates in Upward Bound and the WNY Youth Action Climate Summit. McKenna shows her love of reading in her choices for her most admired historical person — Edgar Allen Poe — and which person she would be for a day — Harry Potter. After high school, McKenna is planning on getting a master’s degree in Communications.

Sophomore Hannah Noelle Weise, daughter of Tammy and Ezra Weise of Mayville, selects math and Spanish as her favorite subjects this year. Hannah has competed on both the softball and the basketball teams since seventh grade. She is also an active member of the High School Bowl team. She has won various academic awards since seventh grade and has also earned Student of the Month multiple times. Outside of school, Hannah enjoys playing basketball, listening to music, and drawing. When asked what historical person she admires, Hannah said “Anyone who has helped advance human rights because they are the people that have made it possible for us to exercise freedom.” Hannah would not like to be another person for a day, but instead “be my cat or dog. I think it would be so cool to know what it’s like to think and live in the life of an animal for a day.” After high school, Hannah would like to attend college and pursue a career in a field she enjoys.

Sophia Marie Shearer, a freshman, is the daughter of Ken and Jennifer Shearer of Mayville. She enjoys geometry and Intro to Engineering the most this year. Sophia has become involved in the CLCS community this year by participating in the Science Olympiad, the High School Bowl team, and Book Club. Outside of school, Sophia loves reading, painting, and drawing. When asked what person she admires, Sophia named Carl Linnaeus because “his system of binomial nomenclature amazes me and his passion for botany and learning was very admirable.” For a day, Sophia would like to be Stephen Hawking to “understand how his mind works and to better my own mental skills.” Sophia’s future plans include becoming a math professor to “give the gift of knowledge to others.”

Mallory Morrison

Eighth grader Mallory Morrison is the daughter of Sarah and Denver Morrison of Sherman. She enjoys gym and ELA the most this year. Mallory’s love of sports is shown with her competing on the school’s basketball and softball teams in both seventh and eighth grade. She also competed on the swim team in seventh grade and the modified volleyball team in eighth. She won the Coaches Award for softball in seventh grade. Outside of school, Mallory enjoys participating in 4-H. Her future plans include attending college.

Kyle Anthony Morgan, a seventh grader, is the son of Keith and Stephanie Morgan of Ashville. This year, Kyle enjoys science and social studies the most. He competed on the modified football team this year. He also earned third place in the entire VFW district for his “Patriot’s Pen Essay” entitled “Why I Honor the American Flag.” Outside of school, Kyle enjoys riding bikes, playing video games and playing football. When asked what historical figure he most admires, Kyle said “I admire Albert Einstein because he was a genius.” If Kyle could be another person for a day, he would be Tom Cruise “so I can learn how to do stunts and be famous.” His future plans include attending college to become a lawyer.

Teacher Tara Reyda coordinates the secondary school Student of the Month recognition program with the help of a selection committee, which includes teachers Michelle Rowe and Joyce Walzer.
