Clay artist

speaks at SUNY Saturday

Clay artist Dr. David MacDonald, professor emeritus at Syracuse University, will speak on Saturday at the State University of New York at Fredonia in The Science Center’s Kelly Family Auditorium, Room 150, at 6 p.m. MacDonald’s work, that derives much of its creative inspiration from his investigation of his African heritage, is nationally renowned and is contained in the permanent collections of The Studio Museum in Harlem, The Montclair Art Museum in New Jersey, and The Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse.

This event is free to the public and made possible thanks to a grant from The Northern Chautauqua Community Foundation.

Sons of Legion meet Tuesday

BROCTON — The Sons of the Legion, Squad 434, will hold its monthly meeting Tuesday. The meeting will be at the Brocton Legion starting at 7 p.m. Monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month.

The Dunkirk Public Library, 536 Central Ave., has announced the following computer classes: Monday, all day: Exploring Tech Talk Database; Tuesday from 1 to 2:30 p.m.: Ancestry Library Edition; Oct. 11 from 1 to 2 p.m.: Intro to AI using Copilot Part 1 of 2; Oct. 16 from 1 to 2 p.m.: Smart Phone Basics; Oct. 18 from 1 to 2 p.m.: Apple IPad Basics; Oct.21 all day: Exploring Tech Talk Database; Oct. 23 from 1 to 2 p.m. Sending Emails; Oct. 24 from 5 to 6:30 p.m.: Ancestry Library Edition; Oct.28 all day: Exploring Tech Talk Database; Oct. 30 from 1 to 2 p.m.: Intro to AI using Gemini part 2 of 2.

Registration is required for all classes. Classes will not run if there are no participants registered. Call 716-366-2511 to reserve a seat. Personal devices are needed for some classes. Brocton-Portland Seniors updated on happenings

BROCTON — Brocton-Portland Seniors met Sept. 24 at Tri Church Parish with President Margaret Jagoda presiding for 53 members. Rita Bennett gave a prayer of thanks followed by the Pledge of Allegiance led by Nancy Hayden.

Committee of the day members Louise Torrey, Brenda Drummond, Candy Philbrick, Nancy Hayden, Rita Bennett were thanked. Community happenings included a happy birthday to Frank Joy for 105 years.

Brocton Ahira Hall Library has a book sale going through Friday Oct. 11. The annual Brocton Arch Festival is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. with 30 artisans and vendors at Ryckman Park. The Apple Butter Festival Oct. 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at West Portland Baptist Church rain or shine.

On Oct. 19, the School Arch Festival will have vendors and flu shots info by calling 753-4876. Tri Church will have their ham dinner on Oct. 26 from 4 to 7 p.m. — eat in or take out. Tri Church has a Grief Life Experience – Safe Place group the third Wednesday at 11 a.m.

Veterans for Christ meet Thursday at 10 a.m. and third Saturday for brunch. Cards were sent to Pat Cook, Mary Dispenza and Judy Hillard.

Tom Hebeisen, Laurel Giambra and Kathy Hobbs will be added to the Veterans Board by Linda Riley.

New members were Cliff Winchell and Becky Dalziel. Mayville Seniors have a trip to Fairgrounds Holiday Festival of Lights Dec. 3. Call 716-224-3217 for details with a cost of $110. Birthdays were John Stoll, Evonne Hennebery, Shirley Wolnik, Rose Brumagin, Bill Hipwell, George Travis, Winchell, Mary Edwards, Betty Erick, Ruth Dorogi, and Rita Stonefoot. Denise Griffin donated two prizes won by Kathy Hobbs and Louise Torrey.

Daune Hemmis and Judy Leone won door prizes. Hayden’s candles decorated tables and winners were Olive Becker, Cecelia Filipkowski, Robin Carr, Dorothy Derby, Judith Nixon, James Hemmis and Shirley Wolnik. A Chinese auction was held with many interesting items. The next meeting will be Tuesday, Oct. 29 with prizes for Halloween costumes by three judges. “Chili by Margaret ” with members bringing food to go with chili, and their own personal table service including a bowl. The committee is Kathy Peters, Barb Crandall, Linda Riley, Bev Strauser and Jagoda.
