Farm Festival children’s pet show Saturday

Applause and laughter abound this summer as children of almost any age – babies in strollers to teenagers nearly old enough to drive – are invited to participate in the 38th annual Fredonia Farm Festival Children’s Pet Show this Saturday. Judging begins at 11 a.m. in the western half of Barker Common, near the gazebo.

Only 10 years younger than the Farm Festival itself, the pet show has become a generational attraction. Former child stars have grown up into parents who bring their children. Through all that time, the show has been presented by Sirius Dog School and conducted by owner, LeeAnne Cogdill.

This year another sponsor, the Northern Chautauqua Comm-unity Foundation, has joined the celebration, providing behind-the-scenes support and being on hand to present each participant with an instant photo to capture the moment.

As always, all species of pets are welcomed, and unusual creatures are hoped for. Young children are encouraged to bring stuffed animals. Judging categories are much the same for animate and inanimate specimens and may include some surprises among the time honored beautiful, handsome, oldest, best groomed, best behaved and best educated categories. A tricks contest runs along the lines of a spelling bee adds excitement to the conclusion of the competition. The winner receives a $5 gift certificate to Just Pets in Irving.

This is the third year for the Pet Show’s new location in the western half of Barker Common near the gazebo. It is larger, has more shade, and is away from the major distraction of curley fries. It is hoped that the audience and participants will find their way west easily. Some spectacular new signs will point the way.
