Girl Scouts visit Department of Computer and Information Sciences

Girl Scouts from Silver Creek and Forestville visited the SUNY Fredonia Department of Computer and Information Sciences on March 21. The scout activities were led by Dr. Ziya Arnavut, department chair, and professors Derrik Decker and Greg Cole. All of the scouts earned their Computer Expert Badge. The Girl Scouts of America recognizes the importance of exposing girls to age-appropriate activities in STEM fields. The scouts learned about the many exciting career opportunities in the fields of computer science and computer information systems. Dr. Arnavut told the scouts about the courses and degree options offered by the SUNY Fredonia Department of Computer and Information Sciences. Professor Decker spoke about the importance of having a strong background in mathematics. Professor Cole planned the activities and coordinated the event. Brownie Troop 20049 meets on the first and third Wednesday of the month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the First United Presbyterian Church in Silver Creek.
