Submitted Photo Vince Martonis discussed American Historical Flasks to the Gowanda Historical Society.

GOWANDA — Vince Martonis, Hanover Historian, was the recent guest speaker at the annual Gowanda Area Historical Society banquet meeting held at Goode’s Restaurant in Gowanda.

His topic was American Historical Flasks from 1820 to 1860. The 22 examples he displayed and discussed highlighted historical figures, places, and events such as George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, Zachary Taylor, Major Ringgold, Columbia, the Civil War, Pike’s Peak, the Masons, the American Eagle, the cornucopia, and others.

He told interesting stories about the history connected to each flask, taking the historical society members and guests on a fascinating journey through some general and some little known facts about American history.

The Gowanda Area Historical Society welcomes new members. It is located at 2 Chestnut St. at the corner of Broadway. It is open Thursdays from 1-4 through November or by appointment. Its web site is www.gowandaahs.org.
