Community news briefs

The Patterson Library, located at 40 S. Portage St., Westfield has a number of programs planned for the coming weeks.

On Fridays at 9:30 a.m., storytime takes place for ages 2 and up. Read stories, sing songs, make crafts and enjoy other Patterson Park fun. Register at the circulation desk or call the library at 326-2154.

On March 20, Miss Emily and Miss Amy present Pajama Party Storytime 6:30 to 7:15 p.m. Children pre-school through second grade are invited to come dressed in pajamas to celebrate bedtime with stories and activities about dreams, the moon and stars and more.

Knit & Knatter Club meets every Tuesday at 1 p.m. in the Main Reading Room.

Adult Hang Out Night is scheduled for Thursday, March 21 from 6 to 8 p.m. with an evening of board games or the opportunity to curl up in a comfy chair with a good book in the Main Reading Room. Child care is available.

The Patterson Library Octagon Gallery presents Deb Eck, “Inside the Secret Garden”. The exhibit opens Friday, March 22 at 7 p.m, and runs through April 19. There will be an art talk April 4 at 6 p.m.

The Culinary Creations Club will meet Wednesday, March 27 at noon, featuring the cuisine of Ireland.

The Blue Marble Book Club meets at 6 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month. March 26 will feature “The Art of Rivalry: Four Friendships, Betrayals, and Breakthroughs in Modern Art” by Sebastian Smee. April 23 is “The Soul of America” by Jon Meacham. May 28 is “Space Barons: Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and the Quest to Colonize the Cosmos,” by Christian Davenport.

The library presents Armchair Travel: Ireland on Thursday, March 28 in the Main Reading Room at 6 p.m.

March 29, the first Tweevening evening of fun just for 10 to 12 year olds will offer this age groups their own special time at the library from 5 to 6:30 p.m. That is followed by Party Gras Teen Night from 7 to 10 p.m

Home Away From Home Homeschooling Day, a monthly meeting of homeschooling families takes place the first Monday of each month at 11 a.m. To register, call 326-2154.

Bestsellers Book Group meets the first Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. Upcoming features are: April 2, “The Library Book,” by Susan Orlean; May 7, “The Mars Room,” by Rachel Kushner; June 4, “Pachinko,” by Min Jin Lee.

Music Matters (Music of the Masters with Justine Green) are presented the first Thursday of every month at 6:30 p.m. April 4 features Late Romantic Music – Tchaikovsky. May 2 will be Modern Music – Prokofiev. “Most orchestras are just 1800s cover bands.”

The Literary Circle meets at 1 p.m. on the second Saturday of each month. The schedule includes: April 13, selected poetry choices from each member; May 11, “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe and June 15, “Winesburg, Ohio,” by Sherwood Anderson.

A Mandala Workshop with Kristen Barber Afionis is planned for Tuesday, April 16 and Thursday, April 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. This program is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a Regrant Program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered by Tri-County Arts Council.

The Pitter Patter(son) Society is the new branch for families with children under 15 wanting to contribute to the Patterson Society. All funds raised by the Pitter Patter(son) Society will go toward children’s programming and purchasing library materials.

Contribute $10 or more to become a member of the Pitter Patter(son) Society.

Looking for some screen-free fun to enjoy with children, grandchildren, daycare center, classroom or storytime group? One Book, Two Book, Read Book, New book is a 15 minute podcast designed for children ages 3 to 8 and their adult listening buddy. Each episode features discussion of an old book and a new book along with real time activities related to a fun theme.
