Steelworker retirees discuss labor voting

Steelworkers Organization of Active Retirees, S.O.A.R., Chapter 4-1, recently held their regular monthly meeting at the Steelworkers’ Union Hall on East Fourth Street.

President Jim Bickhart opened the meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence for deceased members.

Minutes of the previous meeting were read by secretary Theresa Bickhart. Treasurer Clarence Corbett gave the financial report.

President Bickhart read an article by national director, Julie Stern, about the voting records of prominent politicians in regard to supporting labor and retirees. Results can also be seen at the website retiredamericans.org/voting record’

Attendees were also given a copy of a S.O.A.R. newsletter explaining the difference between Medicare and Medicaid.

It was also announced that the president of the United Steelworkers had recently retired, and was replaced by John Conway. Vice president is Dave McCall, and John Shinn is the new international representative.

The local membership now stands at 50 members.

Tickets were purchased to attend the 18th annual summer picnic of S.O.A.R. Chapter 4-6 in Hamburg, scheduled for July 13.

The next meeting of the Chapter will be held on Tuesday, July 23, at noon at the Union Hall.

All retirees are welcome to attend.
