Rails To Trails to hold reopening ceremony

Submitted Photo A reopening ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday for the Nadine and Paul Webb Trail in Mayville.

The Chautauqua Rails to Trails board of directors announced that a reopening ceremony of the Nadine and Paul Webb Trail in Mayville will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Webb Trailhead between Lakeside Park and Boxcar Barney’s on Route 394.

Financial support includes the Ralph Wilson Legacy Fund of the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, the Chautauqua Region Community Foundation and the in-kind support of the village of Mayville. The section of trail between Route 394 and Morris Road in Mayville has been resurfaced with crushed limestone.

“We have been working on this for over a year, so it’s finally nice to see it finished,” said secretary Wendy Lewellen.

The land was donated around 1994 at the height of the Rails to Trails movement of the 80s and 90s. Rails to Trails take old rail beds which are known to be relatively flat a curve free and repurpose them into hiking trails.

“So far we’ve converted about 30 miles,” Lewellen said. “Currently we are working on a trail near Frewsburg we hope to have open soon.”

Organization members and guests are encouraged to take a hike on the updated trail. CR2T’s Third Saturday Hike, co-sponsored by the Chautauqua County Hiking Club, will take place following the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
