Local 4-H youth receive awards at 4-H Dairy Show

2021 4-H Dairy Showmanship Contest Winners: Left to Right- Ava Meyer, Country Critters 4-H Club received Reserve Grand Champion Showman; Erma Wolcott, Lone Member, received Grand Champion Showman; with Dan Crowell, 4-H Dairy Committee Chairman congratulating the youth.

The 4-H Dairy Show was held recently at the Chautauqua County Fairgrounds with 33 4-H youth participating from Chautauqua County who received ribbons and other awards for their efforts showing five different breeds of dairy cattle.

The official judge was Katie Coyne from Geneseo, N.Y.

The youth, ages 9 to 19, showed their dairy animals in 4-H dairy showmanship and in the judging contest. The showmanship contest involved competing for individual awards based upon how well the 4-H members presented their dairy animals to the judge. In the judging contest, youth received ribbons, based upon the judge’s opinion of their animal’s conformation characteristics. This year there were seven youth between the ages of 5 and 8 participating in the showmanship class for DairyBuds. They were not judged for placings, but to gain experience being in the show arena and interacting with the dairy judge. All 4-H Dairy Youth received a Chautauqua County 4-H Dairy t-shirt for their accomplishments in the 4-H dairy program.

4-H dairy junior superintendents Jillian Bond, lone member; and Katie and Maggie King, Cherry Creek Corn Huskers 4-H Club — helped younger youth with their dairy animals and helped wherever needed.

In the 4-H Dairy Showmanship contest, Erma Wolcott was named Grand Champion Dairy Showman and Ava Meyer of the Country Critters 4-H Club was named Reserve Grand Champion Showman.

Submitted Photos Seven enthusiastic 4-H DairyBuds, ages 5-8 years old with help from their “Big Buddies”, enjoyed their time in the show ring and received prizes for their efforts showing their dairy calves.
