Chautauqua County Historical Society to meet April 15

Barcelona Harbor Lighthouse

The Chautauqua County Historical Society will hold its annual meeting on Saturday, April 15, beginning at 10 a.m. at the Lakeshore Assembly of God Church, 252 E. Main St., Westfield.

The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

Following election of new board members and a short presentation of reports, Cristie Herbst, Chautauqua County Historical Society president, will outline the historic circumstances that made Barcelona a bustling commercial port on the Great Lakes until the unthinkable happened. Herbst’s mother’s family, the Jackways, were Great Lakes commercial fishermen operating out of Barcelona for four generations.

The 200th anniversary of the opening of the lighthouse will be celebrated in 2029. Marla Connelly, park manager of the state parks in Chautauqua County, will give an overview of the master plan for the Barcelona Lighthouse, the keeper’s cottage, and adjoining property before Herbst’s presentation.

The Chautauqua County Historical Society is based at McClurg Museum in Westfield. For more information on programs and events, visit cchsmcclurg.org or contact the historical society at 716-326-2977 or email info@cchsmcclurg.org.
