The evolution of the wind band repertoire will be showcased by the Fredonia Wind Ensemble at a concert to be performed on Saturday, Oct. 19, at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall, during Homecoming weekend at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

“Each work in the concert reflects a shift in the concept of the wind band sound or pushes the boundaries of genre expectations, reflecting the versatility of this ensemble for composers and the range of skills required by performers to execute a broad range of styles and forms,” explained Director of Bands Paula Holcomb.

The exciting band classic Second Suite in F” by English composer Gustav Holst, will open the concert. With a modern twist on the Passacaglia, the band will transform into a symphonic organ through American composer Ron Nelson’s experimentation with timbre and texture. In his innovative work, “Passacaglia, Homage on B-A-C-H,” Mr. Nelson uses the notes depicted by Bach’s name as the catalyst for the piece.

Fredonia Concerto Competition winner and soprano Katherine Culver Joslyn, will be featured in Michael Daugherty’s “Labyrinth of Love.” The selection, which was inspired by the love poetry and prose of eight women and reflects a “rock-and-roll” style, explores the love of Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, Mary Shelley and the composer’s parents.

Ms. Joslyn is a senior Music Education major from New Hartford.

The ensemble will conclude the program with Valencian composer Luis Serrano Alarcon’s “Duende.”

“Join us for an exciting evening as we travel through sound,” Dr. Holcomb commented. The concert is free and open to the public.
