Youth Symphony fall concert Sunday

LAKEWOOD — The Chautauqua Regional Youth Symphony (CRYS) opens its 2019-2020 season on Sunday evening, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m., with their Fall Chamber Orchestra Concert.

The Chamber Orchestra, the most advanced of CRYS’s three orchestras, will perform in the Judith Social Hall of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 35 West Fairmount Avenue in Lakewood. A reception will follow the free performance and a freewill offering will be taken.

Compositions in the program include “Orientale” by Cesar Cui, “Variations on a Theme by Handel” by Maurice C. Whitney, “Hatikvah” by Nikola Ovanin and “Festival March” by C.M von Weber.

Acclaimed CRYS Music Director and Conductor Bryan Eckenrode will conduct the concert. Eckenrode directs all three CRYS orchestras, Prelude Strings, Young Artists Orchestra (YAO) as well as the Chamber Orchestra.

Registrations are being accepted now for the spring concert cycle for beginning string players in Prelude Strings, intermediate students in YAO, and advanced students in Chamber Orchestra. Rehearsals for the spring start in January with a spring concert to be held at Chautauqua Institution’s Lenna Hall on May 31.

Membership in the organization is open to all students in Chautauqua County and surrounding areas who play an orchestral string, brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. There is no audition required to participate.

Interested students are encouraged to register directly on the CRYS website or reach out for more information.
