The Fredonia College Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. David Rudge, will present two of the great masterworks of the orchestral literature on Saturday, March 7 at 8 p.m. in King Concert Hall at the State University of New York at Fredonia.

Symphony No. 5 of Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitri Shostakovich will be performed by the ensemble, which includes over 90 students from the School of Music.

Dr. Rudge noted that both works symbolize or were real triumphs over fate. In the case of Beethoven, over his deafness, and with Shostakovich, very dangerous criticisms by Joseph Stalin.

Wayland Whitney serves as assistant conductor of the ensemble.

The event will be live streamed at fredonia.edu/music/live.

The concert is free and the public is invited to attend.

Upcoming orchestra concerts include performances of Strauss’ “Death and Transfiguration” on Saturday, April 25, and the Fredonia Chamber Orchestra featuring The Improv Collective on April 29.
