Discount offered to active and retired military

The next feature film in the Opera House Cinema Series is the Oscar-winning “1917.” It will be screened on Saturday, March 14, and Tuesday, March 17, at 7:30 p.m. Active and retired members of the military will receive discounted admission.

Winner of three Academy Awards — for cinematography, sound mixing, and visual effects — and the Golden Globe winner for Best Picture, “1917” features Andrew Scott, Colin Firth and Benedict Cumberbatch and is directed by Sam Mendes.

At the height of the First World War, two young British soldiers, Schofield and Blake, are given a seemingly impossible mission. In a race against time, they must cross enemy territory and deliver a message that will stop a deadly attack on hundreds of soldiers — Blake’s own brother among them.

Peter Debruge, in Variety, calls the film “one of 2019’s most impressive cinematic achievements.” Adam Graham, in the Detroit News, calls it “a tense, unnerving ride that accomplishes its goal of translating the first-person experience of war better than any war movies that have come before it.” Richard Roeper, in the Chicago Sun-Times, calls it “Gripping, heart-stopping, blood- and mud-soaked, immersive and unforgettable…” Paul Byrnes, in the Sydney Morning Herald, says the film is “breathtaking, horrifying, appalling. It offers a compelling version of what a day in the war might have felt like for two soldiers.” Rated R for violence, some disturbing images, and language, “1917” runs one hour, 50 minutes.
