MAYVILLE — A historical program, “General Lafayette’s visit to Chautauqua County in 1825,” will be presented Thursday at 7 p.m., in the Town of Chautauqua meeting room, 2 Academy St, Mayville, at the Chautauqua Town Historical Society’s monthly meeting. The presenter, Maxwell Walters, is curator of the Fredonia’s Darwin R. Barker Museum.
“Lafayette was the final surviving general of the Revolutionary War, and in 1825 he was one of the most famous people in both America and Europe. His visit to the then-tiny frontier settlements in Chautauqua County was a memorable event retold by eyewitnesses for the rest of their lives. Those stories reveal a great deal about life here two-hundred years ago.” Walters researched this topic in depth for the Barker Museum’s special exhibit, “Night Scene at Fredonia in June 1825: Hosting the Marquis de Lafayette.”
The program will be free and open to the public; all are welcome and encouraged to attend this interesting presentation, on the 200th anniversary of Lafayette’s visit here.
