Opera House Cinema Series to screen ‘Sketch’

“Sketch” will be shown at the Fredonia Opera House on Saturday and Tuesday night.

The Cinema Series continues at the 1891 Fredonia Opera House Performing Arts Center with screenings of the family-friendly fantasy film, “Sketch,” on Saturday, Sept. 20, and Tuesday, Sept. 23, at 7:30 p.m. The Tuesday night screening will be shown with captions visible on the screen.

When a young girl’s sketchbook falls into a strange pond, her fantastical drawings come to life – unpredictable, chaotic, and dangerously real. As the town unravels, she and her brother must track down the creatures before they leave permanent damage. Their father (Tony Hale), racing to find them through the fallout, must navigate a town in crisis to reunite his family and stop the disaster they never meant to unleash.

The Saturday Evening Post calls the film “a miracle of cinematic alchemy, improbably blending elements of ‘Alien,’ ‘Cloverfield,’ and ‘Carrie’ with shards of ‘The Goonies,’ ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?’ and ‘Harold and the Purple Crayon.'” The web site Mashable calls it “a fantastically fun and heartwarming movie with a slathering of weird that makes it a real treat.” The San Jose Mercury News praises the film for “an original, inventive plot, a cast of talented actors and numerous knock-you-out-of-your-seat special effects.” Rated PG for some violence, language, scary action, rude humor, and thematic elements, “Sketch” runs one hour, 35 minutes.

Tickets are available at the door for $7 (adults), $6.50 (seniors & Opera House members) and $5 (students) the night of each screening. The Opera House is equipped with assistive listening headsets for the hearing-impaired. Simply request one from any usher or staff member. The Opera House Cinema Series is generously sponsored by Lake Shore Bank.
