Silver Creek Seniors

The Sept. 18 meeting was called to order on a summery day with 31 in attendance. President Ed Newman warmly welcomed Cindy Anger of Silver Creek and Ted Welch of Irving. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited and “God Bless America” was sung with spirit. Chaplain Dorothy Miniri called for prayers of thanks and acceptance of God’s blessings and abundance.

Just like milk and honey, the super abundance of salads and desserts was overflowing on our table of fullness. Many thanks to our hospitable volunteers.

Miniri made a motion to accept the appointment of existing officers for the same positions in the coming year. Shirley Sikorski seconded the motion. All were in favor. Several events were discussed – the Oct. 2 installation luncheon at the clubhouse, the Oct. 15 casino bus trip to Salamanca and the Oct. 16 Silver Creek School luncheon. For bus trip details, please call Helen Burt at 467-4681.

On the joviality list, Lorrie Newman offered a laughable account of flying economy vs. first class on your favorite airline. Joan Suski chimed in with spontaneous, humorous one-liners.

It has been noted that enjoyment has little to do with success at what you are doing. All the fun belongs to folks who are willing to be bad at something. If you are color blind – paint! If you are shy, speak out! If you are tone-deaf – sing! Today, our memory songs will have everyone crooning over a “Honey” of a gal, and “Ain’t She Sweet?” Her name is “Margie.”

50/50 members were Kathy Huffman, Mary Congdon, Lorrie Newman. Door prizes were won by Sikorski, Miniri, Carl Mohart and Pauline Flitt. President Ed Newman called mind-sharpening bingo and the winners were Joyce Markham, Claudia Markham (twice), Sue Borowski, Sikorski, Flitt, Suski, Sally Shevlin (twice), Jan Synder and Eleanor Lemiszko.

Fun games of shuffleboard and dominoes were played before and after the meeting.

At the next meeting on Sept. 25, volunteers will offer finger foods, fruits and gelatins.

United Senior Citizens

United Senior Citizens met Monday, Sept. 10 at the Fredonia Beaver Club. President Mary Matteson started the group off with the Pledge of Allegiance and “God Bless America.” After the beautiful song, members had a delicious meal of stuffed chicken breast, famous roasted red potatoes, vegetable medley, tossed salad and chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream. However, before one bite was eaten, member Robin Carr was asked to say the blessing at which she gleefully obliged. Diligent member Genevieve Ludemann took attendance while Treasurer Evonne Hennebery and Vice President Linda Riley assisted in handling reserved meals. The group welcomed guest, Fran Smith and new member, Pam Reinhoudt. In addition to the singing of the “Happy Birthday” song to Jim Andin, Mary Edwards, Evonne Hennebery and Kathy Kamery, birthday girl and “Miracle Child” Doris LaSpada shared her Survivor Strong story with the group. Joe Greco Jr. managed the 50/50 raffle and the winners were: Ed McClenathan, Elaine Frederickson, LaSpada and Riley. Thanks always to our callers: Riley, Nancy Niebel, Pat Ebert and Josie Wierczynski. After lunch, members were encouraged to stay for bingo led by Lucy Saeli, Phyllis Laurito, Rosemary Mancuso and Rose Cerrie. October’s meeting will be Monday, Oct. 8. Lunch will be herb-roasted pork loin with side of applesauce, hot German potato salad, vegetable medley, tossed salad with homemade dressings and pumpkin pie for dessert. In addition to a beautiful lunch, we will be having a special speaker from CapTel. To reserve a lunch for you and/or a guest, send $10 check per lunch made out to United Senior Citizens to Evonne Hennebery, PO Box 706, Dunkirk, NY 14048 by Oct. 6. The United Senior Citizens reminds the public to fly the American flag on Sept. 21, and may God bless America!
