Brocton-Portland Seniors ready for Sept. 27 meeting

BROCTON — On Aug. 30, 33 members of the Brocton-Portland seniors met at the John Dill American Legion Post. Jean Jaquith, Vice President, opened the meeting. Laurel Giambra led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Tom DeJoe said the prayer. A guest, Douglas Chantel, joined the club for his first visit. The program for this meeting was bingo, DeJoe did a wonderful job, calling the numbers and everyone enjoyed the anticipation of getting a “BINGO”, and the privilege of choosing a prize from the donated gifts on the prize table. Silver Creek Seniors hold meetings

SILVER CREEK — The Silver Creek Seniors met on Sept. 13 with 29 members present. President Ed Newman opened the meeting with the Pledge to the Flag and all singing “God Bless America.” Chaplin Pauline Flitt read “A Prayer for Farmers” and offered a blessing for all present and the food prepared by the members. The 50-50 winners were Dixie Carlson (twice) and Joan Suski. Winners of the gifts were Don Hoeber, Pauline and Earl Sheeler. Many are at risk when it comes to food safety

Access to safe and nutritious foods is important to promote good health. Unsafe foods may contain harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites or chemicals that can lead to foodborne illness. Anyone can get food poisoning, but older adults are more likely to get sick or have a more serious illness when consuming contaminated foods because their bodies are not as effective at getting rid of these germs as they once were. The Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York and Chautauqua County Office for the Aging will hold a pair of community forums. The forums provide an opportunity for discussion; to bring together community members affected by the disease to share their experiences in order to bolster free resources, provide programs, services, and resources to support families in Chautauqua County. Americans are living longer than ever before. While longer life brings great opportunities, older adults also face an increased risk of developing a chronic health condition or a cognitive disorder.
