Local 4-H Youth Excel in Dairy Quiz Bowl

Submitted Photo Local youth proudly represented Chautauqua County 4-H at the recent Western District Dairy Quiz Bowl contest, achieving success as team members and as individuals.

Local 4-H dairy members represented Cornell Cooperative Extension of Chautauqua County’s 4-H Youth Development Program by participating in the Western District Dairy Quiz Bowl competition at Pioneer Middle School in Delevan March 7.

Dairy Bowl is a quiz bowl where the youth answer questions related to dairy cattle and the dairy industry, and are recognized on their placings, as individuals and as teams. The primary objective of the 4-H Dairy Bowl Contest is to provide an opportunity for 4-H youth to demonstrate their knowledge of dairy related subject matter in a competitive setting where attitudes of friendliness and fairness prevail. Dairy Bowl is an educational experience for both participants and spectators.

Teams from five Western New York counties competed in the beginner, junior, and senior levels on the day of competition. Chautauqua County 4-H had eleven participants compete on four teams in the contest. Ribbons were presented to the top scoring teams and the top ten individuals. The four highest scoring players within each division will move on to the state competition representing the western district. The junior and senior teams are scheduled to compete at Cornell University in early June, while the beginner team will compete at the NYS Fair in August.

Congratulations to the following Chautauqua County youth on their 4-H Dairy Bowl achievements. Our beginner team A included Anna Carlberg, Frewsburg Hayseeds; Laine Carpenter, Frewsburg Hayseeds; and Ava Meyer, Canadaway who placed 3rd; Beginner team B included Brielle Crowell, Lone member; Anastasia Frederes, Lone member; and Grace Meyer, Canadaway placing 4th. Our junior team of Jaden Clark, Lone member; Dayne Jantzi, Clymer Eager Beavers; Larsen Swan, Lone Member; and Max White, Clymer Eager Beavers took top honors with 1st place team. Our senior participant, Jacob Sears, Lone member joined a Wyoming County team, which placed 4th in the contest.

Honors were also given in each division to the top ten individual placings. These were determined by the number of points each 4-H member earned overall and included all of the participants in the entire event.

In the beginner division, Ava Meyer placed 1st, Anastasia Frederes placed 3rd and Grace Meyer placed 6th. In the junior division, Dayne Jantzi placed 1st and Larsen Swan placed 6th. Senior member Jacob Sears placed 4th individual in the contest.

Continued success to Ava Meyer, Anastasia Frederes, Dayne Jantzi and Jacob Sears as they will compete in the upcoming NYS Dairy Bowl contests in their respective divisions.

From the coaches of the Chautauqua County 4-H Dairy Bow teams, Mary Jantzi and Sarah Bean, “We are so proud of all of the 4-H youth. Everyone did an amazing job and were so much fun to work with. To have representation at all levels from our county moving on to the state competition is an outstanding accomplishment. It was a team effort, and none of our success would have been possible without everyone involved.” A sincere appreciation to all of our team members from two very thankful coaches.
