The driver of a vehicle that hit the Beaver Club in Fredonia Monday afternoon “was evaluated on scene by Fredonia Fire (Department) and did not require transport to the hospital,” Fredonia Fire Chief Joshua Myers said Tuesday morning.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Fredonia Police Department.

Firefighters help sinking vessel

A vessel was assisted back to the city marina after it began taking on water.

The Dunkirk Fire Department reports they along with the Chautauqua County Water Emergency Team were dispatched to a report of a boat taking on water approximately 4 miles offshore with four people onboard around 5:36 p.m. Monday.

City of Dunkirk Water Rescue Team members quickly assembled at the Marina and were responding on Marine 1 within six minutes of being dispatched.

The Marine 1 crew made contact with the vessel in distress and assisted them back to the marina. There were no injuries and all units returned to service in approximately 30 minutes.

Propane torch blamed in garage fire

A Dunkirk garage was damaged in a fire Monday.

At around 1:50 p.m., the City of Dunkirk Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house fire at 60 Armadillo St. Upon arrival, crews found smoke coming from a detached two-car garage and not the house.

Further investigation revealed fire burning inside the rear wall of the garage.

Firefighters used a hose and tools to extinguish the fire. There were no injuries. Personnel were on scene for approximately 30 minutes and assisted by the Dunkirk Police Department.

The fire was caused by the use of a propane torch to burn weeds near the building.

CHAUTAUQUA COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

– WESTFIELD – Steven G. Trippy, 33, of Westfield was charged Saturday with Driving While Intoxicated, DWI per se, and loud exhaust following a traffic stop around 1:40 a.m. in the town. He was released on appearance tickets.

– PORTLAND – Jorge L. Jimenez, 66, of Dunkirk has been charged with carrying an animal in a cruel manner under the New York State Agriculture and Markets Law. On Aug. 31 around 7:45 a.m. an investigator from the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office working a detail observed a westbound pickup truck on Route 5. This pick-up truck was pulling a utility trailer behind it with a metal loading ramp on the back of the trailer. The investigator alleges there was a German Shepherd type dog standing in the back of the trailer with a rope tied around its neck. This rope was then tied to the top of the metal gate in a manner so as to have almost no slack in it, forcing the dog to stand constantly and preventing it from laying down. The manner in which the rope was around the dog’s neck also made it appear if the vehicle made any abrupt maneuver the dog had the potential of sustaining serious injury. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted at the scene by the City of Dunkirk Police Department and the New York State Parks Police.
