STAR applications must be filed by Dec. 31

Assemblyman Andy Goodell (R-Jamestown) is again reminding local homeowners to complete the reapplication process to continue receiving their STAR Property Tax Exemption. Re-registration for the program, which saves the average New York homeowner $700 per year, is required before the end of the year, and many local homeowners still have not renewed their exemption. The deadline to apply to continue receiving the exemption on this year’s tax bill is Dec. 31.

“Although there have been no changes made to the program, many homeowners who currently receive the STAR Tax Exemption could lose their savings if they do not act quickly. I strongly encourage Chautauqua County homeowners to take a few minutes during this final week and complete the reapplication process,” Goodell said.

In compliance with new guidelines meant to prevent fraud and abuse of STAR benefits, participants must sign up by telephone or online with the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance to continue their exemption for 2014 and beyond. To register, visit www.tax.ny.gov or call (518) 457-2036. The new guidelines do not affect homeowners age 65 or above enrolled in Enhanced STAR.
