Genealogical Society meets Wednesday

CASSADAGA — The Chautauqua County Genealogical Society will hold its Wednesday meeting at the American Legion in Cassadaga. The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. and the speaker at 7. Cassadaga resident Deborah Metzger, will present a program on “the progression of discarded glass as it tumbles its way to the shores as treasured beach glass.” She will bring samples of beach glass and discuss the possible original time era and history of her “finds.”

The meeting and program are open to the public. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own beach glass or other items of interest found while beach combing, creek walking or field walking, old middens, demolition sites, and tell their story.

Hazardous waste drop off July 22

MAYVILLE — Chautauqua County’s Department of Public Facilities Division of Solid Waste is hosting a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day. Held on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Town of Chautauqua Highway Garage, 50 Patterson St. in the Village of Mayville, this event allows residents to safely dispose hazardous chemicals free of charge.

The service is only offered to households, businesses cannot participate.

Among items accepted include used antifreeze, fluorescent tube lights, flammable adhesives, flammable solvents, paint thinner, mineral spirits, deck cleaners, non-empty aerosol cans, flammable floor polish, herbicides, pesticides, chemistry sets and pool chemicals.

Those taking part in the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off Day must complete a registration form listing the materials they are dropping off. Registration forms are available online at: chqgov.com/landfill/hazardous-waste-collection-schedules and will also be available at the event. A full list of accepted hazardous materials is included on the form.

Computer classes listed at library

Computer classes at the Dunkirk Public Library continue this month. They include: iPads, from 1 to 2 p.m. Wednesday; Getting the most out of your email, 1 to 2 p.m. July 25; Ancestry library edition, 5 to 6 p.m. July 26; Job search tools and sites, 1 to 2 p.m. July 27.

Silver Creek Dems to caucus

SILVER CREEK — A Democratic caucus will be on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Village Hall, 172 Central Ave. Any registered Democrats interested in becoming involved as a village trustee or mayor position, please attend. Any questions can be directed to Deanna Borrello (716) 934-2410.

Library sets Teen Tuesdays

The Darwin R. Barker Library may be closed, but teens 13 years of age and up are invited to stop in from noon to 1 p.m. Tuesdays through Aug. 1. There will be snacks, hang with your friends, play the Xbox, use the WIFI, enjoy the air conditioning plus these fun activities:

¯ July 18 — Mindful crafting. Relax and get creative! Design and make a button, bead a necklace, weave a bracelet!

¯ July 25 — Book discussion — We’ll talk about TJ Klune’s novel “The House in the Cerulean Sea” so make sure to request a copy or check out the ebook or audiobook via the LIBBY app! Or be one of the first five young adults (13 – 18 years of age) to come to the Library and ask the Children’s/Young Adult Librarian, for a copy and it’s yours to keep,

Aug. 1 — Gaming. How do you game? Board? Card? Tabletop? PC? Console? Come play with us and our friends from Heart of the Game Fredonia. No registration required. All library programs are free of charge.

Fair in the Square this weekend

The city of Dunkirk will host a Fair in the Square Vendor Market this Saturday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Washington Park. The public is welcome to attend.

Over 30 craft, gift and service vendors will be on site with four food trucks parked in the center circle of the park.

Entertainment will include the Footsteps duo starting at 11 a.m. followed by Party McFly band at 1 p.m. in the gazebo. Free balloon animals will be available from 11 to 2 p.m. with Rainbow the Clown. Face painting for the children will be present for a fee.

A no-cost community basket raffle will also be held during the event. A secret summer word find among the vendors will be a part of the contest. Winners do not need to be present to win since the actual drawing will take place Monday.
