State issues update on foliage
Peak foliage will arrive this weekend throughout much of the Greater Niagara and Finger Lakes regions while making its way through the Capital-Saratoga region and into the Hudson Valley, down through Orange County. Downstate, near-peak foliage is expected to appear throughout much of Long Island. This is according to the field reports from volunteer observers for the Empire State Development Division of Tourism’s I LOVE NY program.
Locations with peak foliage will include Schenectady and Cohoes in the Capital-Saratoga region; Auburn, Farmington, Owego, Lyons and Penn Yan in the Finger Lakes; Buffalo, Batavia, Lewiston, Niagara Falls and Albion in the Greater Niagara region; Oswego in the Thousand Islands-Seaway region; and Kingston, Newburgh, Westtown, Washingtonville and Cornwall in the Hudson Valley. A few areas of peak colors are expected on Long Island in Cold Spring Harbor, Roslyn and West Babylon.

Legion Auxiliary holds monthly meeting
CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga American Legion Auxiliary Unit 1280 met Oct. 14 holding their regular monthly meeting with 13 members and a guest attending. Guest Diman Smith spoke to the legion about celebrating American Education week, Nov. 17 to 21.
Chaplain Paula Pattison reported the Unit held one funeral luncheon in the past month. Membership chairperson Sally Lawson is now accepting 2026 dues, $30, and can be paid by mail, or they can be dropped off at the Post; and Poppy chairperson Lauren Sharp recently put an order in for our 2026 poppies.
Unit committee chairpersons received their 2025-2026 packets with a reminder that there are three reporting dates this year when their committee reports are due into the county on Nov. 1.
Everything is ready for Unit 1280’s annual Vendor Showcase, set for Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. with 20-plus vendors in one place. Also, members of Unit 1280 will be out front of the Legion on Halloween evening handing out candy, fruit and books for all the “trick or treaters, during the village hours of 5 to 7 p.m.
The Auxiliary and Sons are working on Veterans Day, a dinner and ceremony to honor veterans, to be Sunday, Nov. 9, so our veterans can enjoy other activities available to them on Nov. 11. Unit members voted to have a collection box in the bar area to collect items for the Blue Star Mothers to help with their packages they send to the troops for the holidays; a list will be available at the bar for needed items.
The next meeting will be Tuesday, Nov. 11 at 6:30 p.m. All members are encouraged to attend.
