On the 76th anniversary of D-Day, and amid clear blue skies, three vintage airplanes made a quick pass over the Jamestown area.

The Geneseo-based National Wartime Museum held its second “Operation Thanks From Above” on Saturday, a flyover involving World War II-era planes meant to recognize first responders and essential workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The planes arrived at the Long Point State Park area before hooking east and making a pass over UPMC Chautauqua around 10:35 a.m., about five minutes ahead of schedule.

The planes, including the iconic Douglas C-47, affectionately named “Whiskey 7,” then headed toward Cattaraugus County.

A similar flyover took place May 16 that included the Dunkirk/Fredonia area.
