Driver dies in fiery crash in south county

LAKEWOOD — One person has died as the result of a fiery motor vehicle accident in Lakewood on Friday night.

The Lakewood Fire Department, on its Facebook page, reported that at 9 p.m., it was dispatched to a vehicle fire in the vicinity of the Lakewood Community/Dog Park on Terrace Avenue. Upon arrival, the department established command and reported a fully involved pick-up truck fire about 30 yards off the road into a wooded area with electrical wires down.

The incident was then upgraded to a motor vehicle accident. Another truck arrived on location and firefighters began extinguishing the fire. Firefighters discovered a heavily damaged vehicle from impact and human remains in the vehicle. After a period of extrication the remains were recovered and transferred to the Chautauqua County coroner.

Terrace Avenue was closed for a period of time between Lake and Dunham to Terrace and Fairdale. Crews remained on scene until around 12:30 this morning.

Lakewood Fire Department was assisted by Lakewood-Busti Police, Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, the Fire Investigation Team, and National Grid.
