A small fire in a downtown Dunkirk location Wednesday was quickly extinguished by Dunkirk firefighters.

At 7:25 a.m. the City of Dunkirk Fire Department was dispatched to investigate a report of an odor of something burning and smoke in the building at 314 Central Ave. Upon arrival, crews found smoke throughout the three-story building.

Firefighters ensured the building was evacuated as they searched for the source of the smoke. They then located a small fire in the rear of the basement and quickly extinguished it. There was minimal damage to the building. Assistance was received from the Fredonia Fire Department, East Dunkirk Fire Department, Dunkirk Police Department, Alstar EMS, Chautauqua County Emergency Services and City Code Enforcement.

Crews remained on scene for approximately 90 minutes to clear smoke from the building. There were no injuries. The fire was deemed to be unintentional with human involvement.
