Winds topple trees, lead to outages in north county

High winds led to power outages and damages, according to the Dunkirk Police Department.

In a Facebook post Friday, the department reported it was at the scene after a tree fell onto power lines on Central Ave near Willowbrook Avenue, causing significant damage. Repairs were expected to take an extended period of time.

Dunkirk Fire Department, DPW, and National Grid also responded.

The incident forced closure of Central Avenue between Willowbrook Avenue and Green Street. It was to remain closed until repairs were complete.

As of 3 p.m., power was outages affected around 150 residences in the area.

Wind gusts, as noted by the National Weather Service, included: Dunkirk airport, 59 mph at 6:57 a.m.; Forestville, 50 mph at 5:26 a.m.; Fredonia, 50 mph at 6:30 a.m. and Dunkirk, 43 mph at 3:35 a.m.
