Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary holds summer get-together

CASSADAGA — The Cassadaga Legion Auxiliary held its summer get-together and short informal meeting at the Legion Post, Tuesday, Aug. 14. President Bev Speelberg welcomed everyone, including the County President, Pat Hayward. A prayer was given, and then all enjoyed the dish-to-pass potluck dinner.

After the delicious dinner, numerous announcements were made by committee chairs:

Chaplain Paula Pattison reported that there was recently one memorial service in the past month and Unit 1280 donated the food and served it to the family.

For the Juniors, County President Hayward asked for members to save paper towel and toilet tissue tubes for their upcoming project to help the “Blue Star Mothers.”

Sally Lawson, membership chairperson, announced that she now has 2019 membership cards; dues are $25.

President Speelberg reported that she received a letter announcing that Emily King of Cassadaga had won an 8th District Scholarship.

For VA and R, it was noted that Unit 1280 had collected purses and personal items for lady veterans, and some lap robes made by ladies from the “Charlotte Villa” had been delivered to the local Dunkirk VA Clinic. County President Hayward received a call with a thank you for all that donated to this project; the veteran ladies receiving these items were very happy and thankful.

Membership chairperson Lawson, working with the committee of the “Citizens for a Better Cassadaga,” said that 60 to 70 people attended the Cassadaga “National Night Out” that was held at the Cassadaga beach, Tuesday Aug. 7. There were local fire departments on hand, as well as the Sheriffs and State Police; each group with informative demonstrations and information.

Ice cream sundaes were served to the masses.

Upcoming events:

The Sons of the Legion had a cruise night Wednesday, Aug. 15, with another one scheduled for Sept. 19. Unit 1280 will be holding its usual pie and bake sale at the upcoming event; any pie/goodie donations will be greatly appreciated!

It was also noted that County President Hayward, President Speelberg and Bonnie Vari will be attending Fall Conference Labor Day weekend; it will be a joint meeting with the 7th and 8th Districts.

The children’s Halloween party will be Sunday, Oct. 21 from 1 to 3 p.m.

Unit 1280’s “Vendor Showcase” is set for Saturday, Oct. 27, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Girl’s State interviews are scheduled to be held Sunday, Nov. 18 at 2 p.m.

The annual “Deck the Halls” happening is set for Sunday, Nov. 25 at noon.

The children’s Christmas party is Sunday, Dec. 16 from 1 to 3 p.m.

There will be more information to follow about these events after the September meeting, which will be: Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the Legion hall at 6:30 p.m. All unit members are encouraged to attend; the group can always use new, great ideas to further our commitment to our veterans!

At the end of the summer get-together, Historian Ranee Kaus presented County (Past Unit) President Pat Hayward with her year in office memory book.

President Speelberg thanked everyone for attending, sent them home with a cute joke, and wished safe travels.

Unit 1280 has nice corn brooms for sale at $10 each and members continue to collect “Pennies for Hospice” can tabs for troop support and “Box Tops for Education.”
