To celebrate Earth Day, Revitalize Dunkirk volunteers planted three trees Monday at a city pocket park at Bataan and Central avenues. The trees — Eastern redbud, downy serviceberry and blue beech — are native species whose relatively short mature heights range from 15 to 30 feet, making them appropriate choices for urban settings.

Through its Adopt-a-Garden arrangement with the city, Revitalize Dunkirk members will water the trees through fall this year to ensure their survival. The hope is that these trees will thrive and eventually grow large enough to provide shade for residents who use the benches at Bataan as a convenient resting place during their walks.

The trees for this project were paid for with a portion of a $1500 grant that Revitalize Dunkirk received in 2018 from Keep Western New York Beautiful. The same grant paid for materials for the three raised flower beds the group built last year at “Welcome to Dunkirk” signs.

Revitalize Dunkirk, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that advocates ideas for improved urban living to community members and elected officials. It meets on the third Thursday of the month at 6:30 p.m. at the Fredonia Technology Incubator, 214 Central Ave., Dunkirk. Interested members of the public are always welcome.

Visit www.revitalizedunkirk.com or https://www.facebook.com/revitalizedunkirk for more information on the group’s community projects and activities.
