May 16 student participants of the after-school Dunkirk Middle School STEAM Club had the opportunity to participate in a culminating learning celebration held at Chautauqua Lake Central School. Throughout the duration of the STEM Showcase, sponsored by Chautauqua Striders, students from multiple grade levels and schools in Chautauqua County had the opportunity to share their knowledge obtainment of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics with the community at large.

DMS STEAM students presented their design proposals for the Dunkirk Comprehensive Plan in an attempt to rejuvenate the community. Students demonstrated their use of green screen in order to show their public service announcements in which they created utilizing the iMovie application to inform their viewers of the renovation needs the city has.

Using the information gathered from their initial meeting with Mayor Rosas and field trip to Hotel Lafayette, Canalside, and Riverworks to explore the city of Buffalo’s rejuvenation process, students were able to reveal the potential the area has to make the most use of the proximity to Lake Erie.

Using the data generated from their collaborative Google Form survey that was given to the school community to gain opinions and suggestions as to what facility proposals would be most popular, surveying equipment was incorporated in instruction to design a floor plan that would later evolve into a 3D rendering made on the Home Design application. Using these technological tools, virtual scale models could be displayed at the showcase, raising awareness for the Dunkirk Comprehensive Plan and our students’ potential contribution to real-world problem solving application in the city of Dunkirk.
