Pine Hill Cemetery Celebration Wednesday

Submitted Photo Frank Howard has been groundskeeper and sexton of Gowanda Pine Hill Cemetery for 60 years. He will be honored at Wednesday’s event.

GOWANDA –  The Gowanda Harvest Heritage Fall Festival appropriately begins with recognition of the community’s landmarks, founders and institutions. The Board of Trustees of the Gowanda Pine Hill Cemetery invites everyone to celebrate the heritage of its beautiful cemetery at the 152nd Anniversary Celebration on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at the Hollywood Theater, Main Street, Gowanda.

From 5:30 to 8 p.m., a special Chiavetta’s dinner, multi-media presentation, musical entertainment and program will pay tribute to the cemetery. This “event of distinction” will also honor a very special community member, Frank “Dink” Howard. Howard has been a laborer and sexton of the beautiful cemetery for a total of 60 years. He has devoted his life to maintaining its unique landscape. This quiet, unassuming man prefers anonymity to glory, but deserves high praise, recognition and respect.

Tickets for this fundraising celebration are $15 and are PRESALE ONLY. Tickets are available at Community Bank, Heaven Scent, McCormack’s Hardware, by contacting Jill/David Smith 353-5811 or through members of the Board of Trustees. Additional information can be found on the website www.gowandapinehillcemetery.com.

GPHC was incorporated as a non-profit cemetery in 1867. A local landowner, Joseph Plumb, donated 24 acres of land to create a park-like setting for the interment of local farmers, children, doctors, families, and military veterans from the American Revolutionary War through the Vietnam War.

Community leaders, who were instrumental in the development of Gowanda, are laid to rest in Pine Hill. Prestigious citizens such as pioneer merchant Ralph Plumb, Henry Moench, owner of the Tanning Company and Richard Wilhelm, owner of the animal glue factory in Hidi are included. Additional prominent burials include Daniel Greene Garnsey, a 19th century member of Congress; Colonel Thomas Parker, Civil War commander of the 64th New York Infantry; and Admiral Frank Bailey, naval officer in the Spanish-American War.

President of the Board Scott Campbell summarized, “This cemetery is a gem of the community, a gorgeous and peaceful location in which Gowanda can take great pride. Through this celebration and other endeavors, we will strive to maintain and enhance our cemetery during these times in which all cemeteries are struggling financially.”

The public is encouraged to come and support this wonderful event celebrating heritage, history and hard work of Gowanda residents, past and present.
