Foliage highlights coming train trips

GOWANDA –The New York & Lake Erie Railroad will be running Saturday train trips during October in order for riders to enjoy fall foliage in Western New York. All trips take approximately two hours and will depart from the Gowanda Train Station located at 50 Commercial St. See directions below.

New York & Lake Erie’s schedule includes:

¯ Oct. 19 — Train departs at 1 p.m. for South Dayton, where passengers will have a half-hour station stop. Fares are $18 for adults, $12 for children, ages 4-12, and “Lapsters,” age 3 and under, are free.

Also scheduled is a Brew Chew-Choo train which will depart Gowanda at 6 p.m. The Steel Bound Brewery & Distillery of Ellicottville, is featured for on board brew tasting during the evening journey and is for riders age 21 and over. Light snacks will be served. The trip will also have a short station stop in South Dayton. Fares are $30 for adults.

South Dayton Depot is famous for its part in the Robert Redford movie, “The Natural,” in 1983. Then in 1987, the NYLE and the South Dayton Depot took part in the Steve Martin and John Candy movie, “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”

¯ Oct. 26 — The railroad will have a special event train, the Halloween Express. This 2 1/2 hour trip will depart Gowanda at 1 p.m. for an afternoon of fun, treats and surprises. Riders are encouraged to “dress for the occasion.” Fares are $18 for adults, $12 for children (4-12), and “Lapsters” under 3 years are free.
