Building owner next to Cave’s concerned

BROCTON — Paul Bigelow, owner of the two buildings surrounding 10-14 East Main Street that the village of Brocton now owns, is concerned about the possible damages that could be had from tearing it down.

At the Brocton village board meeting last week, Bigelow showed up to the meeting to express his concerns about the well-known Cave’s Deli building being torn down soon. “I’m just concerned about tearing apart a hundred and something year-old building,” said Bigelow. “If it’s going to expose my side of the building. My sewer lines run through Cave’s.”

In response, Richard Frost, Mayor of Brocton said, “(Attorney Peter Clark) said that’s going to be considered into the Land Bank proposal … The Land Bank has their own insurance … If they damage either side of the property, that’s their liability.”

Bigelow’s main concern is about the possible damages that could happen to his buildings, such as walls being exposed, walls being broken and accidents happening. “We are looking into that (the exposed wall issue) because with the village of Fredonia (referring to a time when the Land Bank tore down a building in Fredonia), they did repair the walls on all sides of that one when they tore it down,” said Frost. “We assume that’s going to be the case, but we haven’t gotten an answer yet.”

In January, it was announced the Land Bank had purchased the two buildings with the intention to tear them down as the one at 10 E. Main St. is a hazard and is already beginning to fall in the rear portion.
