County Genealogical Society meeting scheduled

WESTFIELD — The annual picnic for the Chautauqua County Genealogical Society will be held Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ottoway Park, 8000 Rt. 5, Westfield.

Those attending are asked to bring a dish of food to pass (pot luck) and their own table service for the meal at 5:30 p.m. Those attending may also bring their own meal for their family if they prefer. Water and coffee will be provided.

The venue is a screened-in pavilion and COVID recommendations at the time will be followed. The attendees and guests will have the opportunity to share family stories, genealogical research or a story about an item of family, historical or genealogical interest. Bring a lawn chair to sit on the bank of Lake Erie to enjoy the view.

The speaker at 6 p.m. will be Ken Springirth from Erie, Pa. Springirth is an author and historian, and will be speaking about “Chautauqua County’s Trolley Car History.” Dunkirk especially, and the rest of Chautauqua County were ideally located for the success of the entire trolley car system for recreational travel, business ventures and ease in relocation. Springirth will show maps of the system and will bring some copies of the 47 books he has written about trains and trolley cars. Springirth will be assisted by his wife, Virginia. Books may be purchased at the picnic.
