Hanover youth hoops program facing obstacles

SILVER CREEK — The town of Hanover youth rec basketball program is set to take place, barring restrictions put in place from COVID-19. Town of Hanover Deputy Supervisor Lou Pelletter said he’s not exactly sure what the guidelines will look like, but they are doing their best to be prepared for all outcomes.

“We don’t know what’s going to happen,” Pelletter said. “We have things already planned. We have our meeting the third week of January to discuss what’ll happen.”

The program is set to take place at Forestville High School, pending how the school decides to handle the resurgence of the COVID-19 omicron variant. Pelletter approached the Silver Creek Village Board to pitch the idea of discussing possibly holding the program at Silver Creek Central School.

“I don’t know if you want to meet with Silver Creek, in case their protocol is a little different than Forestville,” said Pelletter.

A main concern of Pelletter’s is that there is a difference between a school program, and a program run at the school. Under the school program, should there be an issue with the pandemic, everyone would have to be quarantined, which is something Pelletter would like to avoid.

“I can’t have Silver Creek people going to Forestville then have them all quarantined because one kid tests positive,” Pelletter said. “We have to figure that all out and that will determine where we’re going to do that.”

Pelletter said there is a new director for the youth rec program, while a couple of the other assistants are the same as previous years. Pelletter also began preliminary discussion with the Silver Creek Village Board on if there were any changes they’d like to make to the summer youth rec program.

“If you wanted to meet with the town, we could discuss how we’re going to do that,” said Pelletter. “We have some extra bills coming in that were thrown on us that I was surprised we got. If you’re going to run it through your account and save us that money, we should probably meet to make sure everyone is on board with that.”

Basketball will have to be finalized, as it will begin right after school break and go until April 2.

The Silver Creek Village Board won’t meet until Monday, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. Silver Creek’s second monthly meeting for January is canceled in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
