City schools’ room to be named in Haynes’ memory

The Dunkirk City School District will rename its secondary school’s Large Group Instruction Room for the Rev. Roosevelt Haynes today at 5 p.m. before a Board of Education workshop.

The room, which was built in 2011, will be dedicated to and renamed for longtime Board of Education member Haynes, who passed away on Dec. 14, 2018.

Superintendent Michael Mansfield said, “No individual is more deserving of this recognition than the Rev. Haynes. It is a privilege to celebrate him and all he did for the students and schools of Dunkirk.”

Haynes moved to Dunkirk in 1968 with his wife, LaPearl, who will attend today’s dedication, and lived here for over 50 years. He served as president, vice president, and clerk of the school board in his many years as a member.

In 2019, the OBSERVER wrote, “Few individuals touched so many lives in the Dunkirk community as Roosevelt Haynes.”
