Investigators have cited “improperly discarded smoking material” as the cause of Tuesday’s fire that damaged the Bullfrog Hotel in Jamestown.
Ryan Roush, battalion chief with the Jamestown Fire Department, said a probe ruled the blaze as accidental.
Firefighters had been called to the property, 1414 E. Second St., at about 8:15 a.m. for a report of a fire inside one of the apartments. The Bullfrog Hotel consists of a tavern on the first floor and apartments on the second and third floors.
The fire extended into an apartment on the third floor; the building sustained fire, smoke and water damage, and utilities were eventually disconnected.
One person was transported by ambulance to UPMC Chautauqua after suffering burn injuries. Roush said the victim was later moved to Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo for additional treatment. An update on their condition was not known Wednesday.
No other injuries were noted.
Reported to have been built in 1902, the Bullfrog Hotel has been owned for the last 43 years by Theodore Langworthy. He said there are seven or eight tenants who reside in the apartments above the tavern.
City firefighters were assisted Tuesday morning by officers with the Jamestown Police Department, the Jamestown Board of Public Utilities, Alstar EMS and Chautauqua County EMS.
