Frehley concert at the Reg literally takes the cake

It was in the shape of a lightning bolt.

It was perfect for the original Spaceman.

Even though Chad Ecklof didn’t get to present Ace Frehley with the lightning bolt cake for his birthday celebration, Ecklof knows that the former KISS lead guitarist enjoyed the cake immensely.

On a whim, Ecklof decided to bake a cake for Frehley.

Frehley performed Saturday at the Reg Lenna Center for the Arts.

Pictured is the lightning bolt cake that was presented to Ace Frehley. It was a marble cake with custard and raspberry filling, and blue icing outlined in silver to pay homage to Frehley’s makeup when he was in KISS.

Ecklof said Frehley performed classic KISS songs as well as his own material such as “New York Groove.” In KISS, Frehley was known to play a smoking guitar. According to Ecklof, fans saw Frehley play his smoking guitar. The concert was produced by SitlerHQ and was made possible by Jamestown Local Development Corp., Fund for Downtown Programming, and the Downtown Revitalization Initiative.

Growing up, Ecklof said he was a huge KISS fan, and he liked Frehley.

“Just the chance to see him was pretty cool. Saturday morning I just decided to bake a cake and see if they (tour staff) would let me drop it off for him,” Ecklof said,

Ecklof, owner of Ecklof Bakery, 832 Foote Ave., contacted Doug Sitler, the concert promoter. Sitler told Ecklof that Frehley’s staff was trying to figure out how surprise Frehley with a birthday celebration. Frehley turned 72 on April 27.

So Ecklof arrived at The Reg, and delivered the marble cake with custard and raspberry filling, and blue icing outlined in silver to pay homage to Frehley’s persona when he was in KISS. Ecklof then joined with his children Jacob, 12, and Ethan, 9, to watch the show.

“It’s one of the more popular flavors that we have down here (at Ecklof’s) that people request. I figured if I was going to bake a cake for him, I would bake him something that this community loves most,” Ecklof said. “Just seeing him receive a cake from me, that was legendary.”

Ecklof also was surprised because he didn’t think the cake would be given to Frehley on stage. “I just thought it would make it to the green room,” Ecklof said.

After the concert, Ecklof said, people commented to him how nice it was that the cake was brought to Frehley on stage.

Talk about taking the cake.

“I was stoked. It’s a memory of a lifetime,” Ecklof said.
