Weiser seeking Dunkirk City Council at-large seat

Dr. Nick J. Weiser

Dr. Nick J. Weiser, the Democratic and Working Families Party endorsed candidate for Dunkirk City Council at-Large, announces his candidacy for the upcoming election on Tuesday, Nov. 7. Driven by a deep passion for the community and a vision for its future, Weiser stands ready to lead Dunkirk towards greater prosperity and unity.

Dunkirk, a city with boundless potential, has recently received a significant boost with the award of a $10 million Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant from the state. This grant represents a pivotal opportunity to transform our city, stimulate the local economy, and create lasting improvements. However, it is essential that the incoming city council exercises diligent oversight to ensure these projects are executed effectively, benefiting all residents.

Weiser’s extensive experience in leadership and collaborative decision-making positions him as the ideal candidate to guide Dunkirk through this transformative period. As the architect and head of the internationally acclaimed Jazz Studies program at SUNY Fredonia, he has demonstrated his ability to build something remarkable from the ground up. His service on various high-level university committees, including the University Planning and Budget Committee, showcases his administrative prowess and capacity to work collaboratively in diverse settings.

Moreover, Weiser’s unwavering commitment to community engagement is evident through his active involvement in organizations such as the Dunkirk-Fredonia Rotary Club, the Dunkirk Historical Society, Revitalize Dunkirk, and the Dunkirk Brownfields Marketing Steering Committee. As the co-founder and artistic director of the Fredonia Jazz Society, a not-for-profit organization dedicated to bringing live music to our community, he understands the cultural significance of art and its role in community vibrancy.

Weiser’s campaign is also endorsed by the United Auto Workers union, the Sierra Club, and the United University Professions union, reflecting broad support for his vision of a thriving and inclusive Dunkirk.

In addressing the challenges facing Dunkirk today, Weiser emphasizes the need for a united City Council. “We cannot afford complacency or division within our Council,” he asserts. “It’s essential to foster an environment of productive dialogue and cooperation to drive progress that benefits all residents. My commitment to bipartisanship is unwavering, ensuring that the city and its people always come first.”

As a homeowner in Dunkirk’s Second Ward, Weiser knows firsthand the appeal of the city, which is widely recognized as one of the most affordable lakeside communities in the U.S. He believes that Dunkirk’s diversity is its strength, and he is dedicated to celebrating that diversity and ensuring that everyone has a voice in shaping the city’s future.
