Second fire in three months occurs on Beaujean Road, Mayville

MAYVILLE – A property that has been the subject of numerous complaints of drug use and people living in temporary structures has had a second fire in less than three months.

According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office, at around 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, firefighters from Mayville, along with mutual aid, responded to a camper trailer at 7127 Beaujean Road, near Chautauqua Lake Central School, just outside the Mayville limits.

Investigators with the Sheriff’s Office say the fire remains under investigation.

On January 17, during the overnight hours, firefighters responded to that same address for a report of a fire. Investigation found the fire was caused by a propane gas leak within a camper on the property. As a result of the fire, several campers and outbuildings were heavily damaged, leaving them a complete loss.

After that fire, nearby residents attended the Chautauqua Town Board, and said that fire didn’t stop people from living in numerous temporary structures on the property. They called the property a “compound” and called on town leaders to address the situation.

For nearly a year, neighbors have been regularly attending Chautauqua Town Board meetings, asking officials to address the problems at 7127 Beaujean Road. Complaints included sewer violations, illegal trash burning, and too many people living in non-permanent structures.

Neighbors have also alleged that people living on the property have trespassed on neighboring properties, and drug paraphernalia has been discovered on school grounds.

The Sheriff’s Office has been called to the property multiple times and Chautauqua town officials have requested copies of the deputies’ body cams to try to identify specific code violations.

Town officials said at one point the electricity was shut off to the property, but it was restored by the Department of Social Services.
