County sets stipend for coroners doing transports

MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County coroners who transport decedents will soon be getting additional pay.

During the county legislature meeting, lawmakers set a stipend of $250 in addition to a coroner’s fixed salary when making a transport to the Erie County Medical Examiner’s Office or other destination. If making a transport in Chautauqua County, the coroner will be paid a stipend of $175.

Coroner Supervisor Tony Sheckles said at a committee meeting that the county contracts with funeral homes at a higher rate, so this will save the county some money. He also said that if he transports a body, no stipend will be paid.

He said typically a transport to Erie County will take up to four hours.

The county has a vehicle for coroners to use.

The resolution was unanimously approved.
