County won’t help Dawson Metal with bridge issue

Chautauqua County is declining a request by a Jamestown company for a new access road to replace a failing bridge, stating that the county can’t do the work to benefit a private business. David Dawson, president of Dawson Metal at 825 Allen St., said in a letter to the county that the bridge to their business has deteriorated and is a safety hazard. “Its continued degradation threatens access to the site, creating serious risks for employees, visitors, suppliers and emergency response services,” he wrote. County to host hazardous waste disposal Saturday in Dunkirk

The Chautauqua County’s Department of Public Facilities Division of Solid Waste is inviting county residents to safely dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste during a special collection event on Saturday, June 27, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Dunkirk Department of Public Works, 19 Lucas Ave., Dunkirk. City library receives gift from Carnegie Corp.

The Dunkirk Public Library has received a $10,000 gift from Carnegie Corp. of New York, the foundation established by Andrew Carnegie. The award is part of Carnegie Libraries 250, a special initiative celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence and honoring the roughly 1,280 Carnegie Libraries still serving their communities across the United States. Summer brings increase in Ellicott homeless issues

Winter brought a brief respite for the town of Ellicott and village of Falconer in dealing with homeless issues in the town. The issues have returned with a vengeance. During the Ellicott Town Board’s most recent meeting, Dan Ingrao, Ellicott police chief, told board members had attended a meeting in early June regarding issues with the homeless at the Quality Inn. Ingrao said police had responded to 22 more calls in May at the hotel than they did in April, with calls increasing from 47 to 69.
