Meeting to focus on city senior facility work

OBSERVER Staff Report

A special meeting of the Dunkirk Senior Citizens is expected to give some insight into the upgrades and additions to the facility at 45 Cliffstar Court.

Members of the Senior Center, Dunkirk Mayor Wilfred Rosas; members of the current City Council and the incoming City Council; Mary Ann Spanos, director of the Chautauqua County Office for the Aging and Frank Bercik, executive director of Chautauqua Adult Day Services will be attending the gathering at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Discussion will center around the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York funds it awarded to the center of $750,000.

Last month, about 60 area senior citizens discussed concerns regarding the grant. Improvements are expected to include an activity area, two physicians offices for rotating doctors, two new restrooms that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act that include shower capabilities, two clerical offices and window and door replacements for more energy efficiency in the building.

Nancy Renckens, president of the city of Dunkirk Senior Citizens Center, voiced concerns over how this will affect the organization she oversees. “Now that it’s a done deal, we want to take it and do what we can with that money,” she said at the Oct. 22 event. “We do a lot and we want to do even more and we can’t take that chance that we’re not going to be able to.”

This meeting is open to all area seniors.
