Brocton prepared for summer concerts and Arch Festival

OBSERVER Photos by Braden Carmen The Village of Brocton is prepared to host summer concerts at Ryckman Park. As it did a year ago, the Village Board again donated $500 to the Ahira Hall Memorial Library to sponsor one of the seven concerts this year, as proposed by Mayor Craig Miller, above.

BROCTON — Summer is just around the corner, and the Village of Brocton is getting ready with activities to keep the community busy.

The Brocton summer concert series has been set, with seven concerts lined up through July and August at Ryckman Park. The concerts are organized by the Ahira Hall Memorial Library.

The first concert is set for July 11, with a concert each Thursday night through Aug. 22. If any of the seven concerts must be postponed due to weather conditions, the concert will be rescheduled for Aug. 29.

As suggested by Mayor Craig Miller a year ago, the Village sponsored a concert with a $500 donation. Miller raised the idea again this year, and the Board once again approved a $500 donation. Miller called it “awesome” that the Library wanted to hold the events in the park.

Miller also reported the Arch Festival Committee intends to donate funds raised from its event earlier this past fall.

The Ahira Hall Memorial Library, Brocton-Portland Little League, Blue Star Mothers, and the Brocton-Portland Historical Society will each receive $400 donations from the Arch Festival Committee, with a substantial amount still remaining in reserves for future operations.

The Arch Festival was held this past fall at Brocton Central School because of poor weather. It was held at Ryckman Park the year prior. Moving forward, the Committee is evaluating the possibility of two different events to accommodate both indoor and outdoor vendors and guests. According to Ahira Hall Memorial Library Director Julie Morrison Putcher, close to 300 people attended the inaugural event at Ryckman Park, and more than 400 people attended the event at the school last fall.

As the Village proceeds with playground repairs at Ryckman Park in hopes of not missing out on being open for the summer, another site for youth recreation in the Village has already seen substantial progress. The Village has installed basketball hoops at the newly re-paved basketball courts on Kinney Street next to the Fire Hall. The Village is now seeking to seal the pavement and create shooting lines for the basketball court in the coming weeks, as discussed at a recent Village Board meeting.

The Village Board also recently approved the addition of Tina Colston to the Brocton Volunteer Fire Department, upon the recommendation of Fire Chief Bill Hussey, pending a background check. Hussey stated that Colston is a veteran of the U.S. Army with more than 25 years of service, who also has experience as a grant writer. The Village is currently seeking grant funding to improve its Fire Hall.
