Rural Ministry ready for Thanksgiving

Meeting the need

In preparation of distributing their Thanksgiving baskets, several groups helped Rural Ministry meet the need. St. Anthony’s Church in Fredonia, collected more than 800 pounds of food during the weekend to help Rural Ministry with their Thanksgiving baskets.

“This year we had 87 individuals and families, consisting of nearly 200 people apply for a holiday basket,” states Executive Director Kathleen G Peterson. St. Anthony’s once again has given Rural Ministry a huge start to the holiday giving as they collected 51 turkeys, five hams, gift cards to purchase items and 800 pounds of food.

“We were short about 41 turkeys to fill all of the applications and St. Anthony’s not only met that need but also have given us a start for the Christmas food baskets,” Peterson continued.

Upon receiving the food at its offices, located at 319 Washington Ave. in Dunkirk, Troop 20033 helped sort the food into the bins for distribution on Tuesday.

There is still a need for gravy mixes, canned vegetables, canned fruit, canned sweet potatoes, boxed potatoes, boxed dessert, and cranberry sauce.

Rural Ministry will accept Christmas food and gift applications only from noon until 3 p.m. Dec. 2 to 6. Applicants need to bring proof of residence, proof of income and social security cards for all family members. If applicants have applied at another helping agency prior to Rural Ministry application dates, they will be helped by that agency. “We want to continue to ensure all families have a meal to cook at home and for those who are alone, can come to the Rural Ministry and share the holiday with us,” Peterson said.

Rural Ministry will be serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and a Christmas meal on Christmas Day from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The Friendly Kitchen is located at 319 Washington Ave. and all are welcome to share in the meal. CCRM is seeking holiday pies for the meals.

If you would like to make a contribution to CCRM’s holiday giving program, items can be dropped off at their headquarters on 319 Washington Avenue in the City of Dunkirk or call 366-1787 for more details.
