Urgent care center opening Thursday

The new urgent care facility on Vineyard Drive is opening Thursday.

Dunkirk Town Supervisor Richard Purol said at Tuesday’s town board meeting that there will be a ribbon cutting that day for WellNow Urgent Care. The company’s website lists its Dunkirk location as “Accepting new patients beginning November 21st.”

Dunkirk Town Councilman Juan Pagan said the fire department will be doing a walk-through of the facility today.

The center will be up and running while there is still work to be done on-site. The main concern seems to be signage.

The town of Dunkirk’s Zoning Board of Appeals meets today at 5 p.m. to consider a variance for see-through signs on WellNow’s windows, which will advertise the center and allow people inside to look out, but will keep outsiders from looking in.

Purol noted, “They’ve already got two different sign applicants from two different companies.” One is for a ground sign and another is for a sign on a pole.

The supervisor said WellNow was granted a variance by the zoning board for the pole sign to be over 35 feet tall. “They allowed that?” asked Town Councilman Jay Bishop. “They allowed that because they allowed that for every other business in the area,” Purol replied.

Bishop expressed concern about the proliferation of large signs in the area, as Purol noted that businesses want them so they can attract drivers from the nearby Thruway.

“Can we ask (the Zoning Board of Appeals) to come to the town board and ask how they make these decisions?” Bishop said. “We’re the stewards of our town based on our position here, and we want to make sure they are doing this consistent with our standards as stewards.”
